How to choose an alternative

  • Refillable color: compare the Epson ET-2850 and Canon G3270, then decide whether automatic duplex matters more than dual-band Wi-Fi.
  • Color office functions: the Brother MFC-J4335DW adds fax and an automatic document feeder but uses proprietary LC406 cartridges rather than bottles.
  • Linux and text: the Brother HL-L2460DW has the clearest official Linux and local-protocol evidence, but it is monochrome and print-only.
  • Open hardware: none of these products is a substitute for an open design. They are conventional proprietary printers with different local-control and supply options.
